Joint press conference hosted by the Alberta Somali Community Center and the Canadian Somali Congress on the unresolved homicides of 24 young Somali Canadian men in Alberta
The Alberta Somali Community Center and the Canadian Somali Congress recently hosted major Alberta media outlets in order to bring attention to the unresolved homicides of 24 young Somali Canadian men in Alberta and to correct some of the media reports surrounding this and other issues affecting our community.  Alberta’s Canadian Somali community is very concerned about the fact that these homicides still remain unsolved.  All of them were shot to death.  One of the issues that needed to be dealt with is the way Alberta Somalis are seen by the mainstream media and some government representatives.  Alberta Somalis have constantly been depicted in a negative light and this has contributed to their marginalization in Alberta society as well as people having low expectations of this otherwise dynamic community.  Due to this reality, it has become urgent for the Alberta Somali community to change negative stereotypes by actively engaging the media and correcting wrong perceptions.  It is also important to repeatedly state the fact that the vast majority of Alberta Somalis are law abiding citizens and also present to the media and others the positive contributions that Alberta Somalis make into the larger Canadian society.
These steps will reduce and eventually eliminate the marginalization of our community and hopefully contribute to our capacity to demand that everything must be done by those in positions of power to solve the murders of our young men and to quickly bring those that are responsible for their deaths to justice.  The community demands nothing less.  Justice delayed is justice denied!
